300-Word Essay

How long is a 300 word essay? The simple answer is that a 300 word essay is not very long. Now, before you start getting happy about how you do not have to write for long, you must understand that although short, a 300-word essay can be hard. This is because it is usually almost impossible to fit so many points in so little a word count. However, in this article, you will learn how to properly fit your points into a word count so small and limiting. So, keep reading.

1. Choose Your Topic

This is the first thing to do as it helps you know about what you intend to write. Usually, most lecturers give their students a list of topics to choose from. If you are one of such students, then it is advisable that you pick the topic that you understand the most. However, if all the topics on the list seem hard to you, then you can ask your lecturer or a senior for help. Remember, there is no shame in asking for help when you need it. When you ask for help from your lecturer or senior, their explanation will help you understand and it will become easier to go ahead with writing.

Similarly, if you have to come up with a topic yourself, make sure you pick one that you can easily understand.

Also, remember, before writing your essay, read the instructions attached carefully. One way for you as a student to lose marks easily is by not following the instructions that come with the essay. So, make sure you read the instructions at least twice before you proceed with writing. Remember, if you get confused at any point, you can always ask your lecturer or a senior to help you.

2. Research the Topic

The next thing to do after picking your topic is to research for content you will need. There are two ways you can go about this: first of all, you can go online to search for information. Now, this is a very easy way to research your topic. Also, when you search online, you can get different sources of information at once – from blogs to sites, to databases. However, it is advisable that even though a source provides rich information, if it is not an academic site or an authoritative site then you should not cite that source. If you do, you could lose marks. However, you can use such information as inspiration for your writing.

Secondly, you can visit your school’s library physically to get information. Now the disadvantage of this is that you have to browse through the different subject sections to get the right information you need. However, you can easily cite the sources you get there in your essay as most of them are academic sources.

3. Start Writing

Now here comes the hardest part of the essay. At this part, you may have questions like, “How long is a 300 word essay double spaced?” or you may even ask, “How long is a 300 word essay typed?” The answer is 1.2 pages.

The best way to fit all your ideas in this small word count is by dividing it among its introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. For the introduction, you could write 50 words, write 200 words for the body paragraphs, and 50 words for the conclusion. For the body paragraphs, you could separate them into three and write three main points for each. Remember this is a 300-word essay, you need to go straight to the point when writing.

4. Proofread and Check for Plagiarism

Finally, edit your essay and check for plagiarism. You can edit your essay in two ways: first of all, you can use a spell checker tool online to help you correct grammatical mistakes. Secondly, you have to reread your work to look for any misplaced sentences or human errors which the spell checker tool was unable to detect. After doing this, check for plagiarism to ensure that your work passes the originality mark.

Deficiencies in Police-Community Relations

Up to the end of the Second World War, police agencies throughout the country were mired in poor community relations and thus alienated from those in which they were sworn to protect and serve. Various reasons were cited including parents who taught their children to either fear or distrust police and individual officers who either did not feel a need to community with community members or were corrupt of violent (Ross, 2012).

However, this led to a movement of sorts after the war for law enforcement agencies to institute early forms of community policing which appears to have been quite successful until the 1960s. As a result of social unrest that occurred as a result of the war in Viet Nam and the Civil Rights Movement, police across the country found themselves, once again, alienated from the public-at-large. Yet, efforts to improve relations with communities did not begin to take shape until the end of the 1970s with the introduction of problem oriented policing, or POP for short (Ross, 2012).

POP was a way in which to address crime from a structural standpoint and with assistance by community members was a proactive approach to address deficiencies within communities identified as causing crime. While POP would eventually lead to what is now recognized as community-oriented policing, the problem with instituting either approach is that police agencies are slow to embrace change and, thus, resort to practices which are more authoritarian (Ross, 2012).

It would seem that local criminal justice agencies throughout the nation have “ramped up” such authoritarian approaches since the tragic events that had occurred on September 11, 2001, as they were provided by the federal government with the financial means to purchase military-style equipment in exchange for cooperation in intelligence gathering. This accelerated militarization of police agencies has again formed a wedge throughout communities in the country and aggressive policing has now caused a great deal of conflict with no apparent resolution forthcoming.
